On February 13, 2024, Mr. Pan Qingjiang, Consul General of China in Johannesburg, met with Kabelo Gwamanda, Mayor of Johannesburg. Mr. Pan briefed the current development of relations between China and South Africa, and China and Johannesburg. He expressed his readiness to work together for the furtherance of sub-national exchanges and cooperation with the aim of delivering more results. Mayor Gwamanda said that Johannesburg Municipality attaches great importance to developing relations with China and looks forward to the growth of friendly and pragmatic cooperation with Shanghai and other places in China.

The two sides also exchanged views on safeguarding the safety and legitimate rights and interests of Chinese institutions and personnels in Johannesburg.
