Wang Qishan Attends the Inauguration Ceremony of New Philippine President

On June 30, 2022 local time, at the invitation of the Philippine government, Special Representative of President Xi Jinping and Vice President Wang Qishan attended the inauguration ceremony of new Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and met with him. On June 29, Wang Qishan met with then President Rodrigo Duterte and new Vice President Sara Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio, respectively, in Manila.

When meeting with Marcos, Wang Qishan passed on President Xi Jinping's congratulatory letter to Marcos and conveyed President Xi Jinping's cordial greetings and best wishes to President Marcos. Wang Qishan said, the traditional friendship between China and the Philippines has lasted for over a thousand years. Mr. President and your family, having a deep relationship with China, have made great contributions to promoting the China-Philippines friendship. China always prioritizes the Philippines in its neighborhood diplomacy, and looks forward to working with the new Philippine government to carry forward friendship, enhance mutual trust and continue cooperation, so as to usher in a new "golden age" of China-Philippines relations.

Wang Qishan put forward a four-point proposal on developing bilateral relations in the next stage. First, stay committed to the course of China-Philippines ties steered by the heads of state. Second, stay committed to synergizing development strategies, and further foster new growth drivers of pragmatic cooperation between China and the Philippines in the new era. Third, stay committed to properly handling disputes, and jointly safeguard peace and tranquility in the South China Sea. Fourth, stay committed to upholding international justice, and jointly promote peace and development in Asia, fairness and justice in the world, and the well-being of all mankind.

Marcos asked Wang Qishan to convey his heartfelt thanks and sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping, and warmly welcomed Vice President Wang Qishan's attendance at the inauguration ceremony in the Philippines. Marcos happily recalled his 1974 visit to China when accompanying his mother, saying that Philippines-China relations date back to ancient times and the two peoples are close to each other. China is the strongest partner of the Philippines, and good neighborliness and friendship are in the fundamental interests of the two peoples. The new Philippine government attaches great importance to the relations with China, and stands ready to engage in Belt and Road cooperation to a greater extent, join hands with China to meet regional challenges, and elevate bilateral relations to new heights.

When meeting with Duterte, Wang Qishan first conveyed President Xi Jinping's cordial greetings and best wishes to Duterte, saying that over the past six years, steered by President Xi Jinping and President Duterte from a strategic perspective, bilateral relations have been improved, cemented and upgraded, marking a highlight in the history of bilateral relations. The two sides have established the new positioning of the China-Philippines comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, upheld good-neighborliness, friendship and cooperation, adhered to properly handling differences, and stayed committed to working together for common development, thus embarking on a new journey of deepening cooperation in various fields. Amid the pandemic, China and the Philippines have helped each other and overcome the difficulties together, with the resilience and vitality of bilateral relations being increasingly evident. China hopes that President Duterte will, as always, care for and support the development of China-Philippines relations and continue to play an important role in inheriting and carrying forward the China-Philippines friendship.

Duterte asked Wang Qishan to convey his cordial greetings to President Xi Jinping, saying that in recent years, under the joint guidance of the leaders of the two countries, Philippines-China relations have been further consolidated, with cooperation in various fields yielding fruitful results. Duterte stressed that he cherishes the friendship with President Xi Jinping, once again thanked President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government for their sincere help to the Philippines and its people, and expressed readiness to continue contributing to the friendly cooperation between the Philippines and China.

When meeting with Sara, Wang Qishan congratulated her on winning the election and assuming the new post. He said, the Chinese side believes that under the leadership of the new government, the Philippines will surely make new and greater achievements in national construction, and its relations with China will surely make further progress. The Chinese side is ready to foster and expand new areas of cooperation on people's well-being, and deepen educational and sub-national cooperation between the two countries.

Sara said, the Philippine side will continue adhering to the foreign policy of good-neighborliness and friendship with China, and looks forward to deepening cooperation with China in various fields to elevate Philippines-China relations to a new level.

During his stay in the Philippines, Wang Qishan also cordially met with Imelda Romualdez Marcos, mother of Philippine President Marcos.
